Too Old School....

...for facebook? I was just about the last person in the world to get a cell phone, and I was on the same path for facebook. Long time hold out. Not completely sure why but maybe because I nag my way-too-cool daughter for spending sooo much time on it.

Last night I broke down.

Today I spent, oh, maybe 8 hours wandering and searching. Oy vey!

Hey Alicia, do as I say, not as I do.

So now I'm wondering, does facebooking replace blogging?

And also, if we are facebook friends, please don't be offended if do some horrendous breach of etiquette. I'll likely be as socially klutzy on there as I am in real life!

Facebook/Myspace is for kids and pedophiles....After 18 it should be a law you can't have one.

Shit...now I'm certain the Apocalypse is upon us...

I'm just glad my kids aren't old enough yet that I'd feel the need to "monitor" facebook and myspace...but, I'm sure that day will come.

Condolences from a fellow Luddite.

The problem is, all of you are right!

On the one hand, I see my best friend from 6th grade is on FB. He and I started bike riding together in the summer before 7th grade. Most likely, had he not been my friend, I never would have started bike riding. He moved away before high school and within a couple years we lost touch. He went on to work at Specialized and then became president of FSA. Wow! Without the internet, I never would have rediscovered him. Should I invite him as a friend? Does he really give a sheet about the boring details of my day-to-day life? Does anybody? Rhetorical questions. Point is, FB and the internet in general changes the whole game of social interaction. I know everybody knows this, but it still staggers me.

So here's the flip side, how much impact on our productivity does this have? Sure, some people are mature enough to budget their time wisely. I'm probably not one of them. I worked zero hours yesterday. I NEED to work. How many kids are spending time on FB rather than doing their homework? Yes, I'm an old fuddy duddy...

But I must admit, I'm enjoying my daughter's reaction that dorky dad is on facebook now too. I have not insisted that she be friends with me. I probably won't. She's given us no reason to worry. Her friends (in real life) are rock solid, and besides, she will be an adult in less than two years anyway.

Geez, ease up on yourself, Fanelli. How much longer until MOTHBALLS????

Myspace is for kids with all their annoying backgrounds and music that plays when you visit somebody's page. Facebook is for the more mature that think that Myspace customization is friggin' annoying...

Welcome, Marco.

Thanks Miss Anony!

Yes, I agree about myspace based on what I saw snooping on Alicia back when she was on there. Just you watch though, now that the oldsters like me are jumping onto facebook, all the kids will go somewhere else. That's the way it's always been...and that's the way it always will be.

BTW, damn this facebook.... I've spent the last 4 hours digging through old pictures to digitize and post. Where to put them... FB or here? bike racing from the 70's through the 90's. Tons of them...

Here.

or...both? :-)

First of all, TnA, anyone who has a pile of powermeters on his bike does not have the right to use the term Luddite!! BTW...isn't that extra weight?

Marco...I think we hold the distinction for the last cell phone holdout. We don't use the thing though...Mark just takes it with him to add weight on rides. BTW...isn't FB old school? Maybe you should be Twittering?

I enjoy your insights and ponderings...please don't abandon us. Also, maybe you should try chocolate for stress.

Tna, Chesta, Dawn-

I'm thinking that blogging is more my cupa tea. Slower pace and all. Not sure about all the FB etiquette and such things ...writing on walls... ...tagging oneself in pics... ...inviting friends I barely know just 'cause they seem nice or interesting... ...voyeuring into other people's lives...

Also, my sister warned me that you (I) might find out stuff about people that you'd (I'd) would rather not know...

Marco,

I still don't have a cell phone. Also I train by HR (gasp) not power. I know, I am oldschool!
